Christian Clothes for Your Teen

Roberto Bell

Like most female teenagers, Christian teen girls want clothes that are fashionable, but they also want to express their style and individuality without compromising their personal belief system. In secular society, it is hard for a teen to balance being young with being a Christian. So much of youthful fashion is geared toward an edginess that is more exploitative than fun. From Justin Timberlake's bringing "sexy" back to videos of girls going "wild", the constant bombardment of negative and overtly sexual messages can discourage teen Christian girls. They want fashionable clothes that are not too tight, too low-cut, or too short. Finding modest, stylish clothes is sometimes an exercise in frustration. Thankfully, a growing number of clothing lines are geared specifically for teenage girls who want to show their Christian convictions and spread the gospel through fashionable imagery and expressions without sacrificing their style.

So what types of clothes do Christian girls like? Years ago, their taste trended toward the more conservative. Today's teen, however, wants to express her individuality, not her parent's sense of fashion. Modern-day styles are more diverse; running from preppy to hip-hop, to gothic. The gothic style is currently very popular with Christian teens. Just like any other teen, Christian teens want to be "cool" and be able to spread their message of faith to their friends and peers, too. Fashionable Christian clothing lets them do both.

For the Christian youth who wants to spread a positive message, there are stylish t-shirts that convey those messages without sounding "preachy". There are also fashionable tees with impressive graphics that relay Biblical imagery. Familiar expressions are still very popular, such as "God is Love" while others present favorite Bible passages. Imagery includes crosses, praying hands, angel's wings, and hearts. The colorful iconography is eye-catching, tasteful and even fun. More importantly, they can lead to conversations offering Christian teens an opportunity to express their faith.

Christian clothing comes in a variety of styles and sizes. Destroyed t-shirts are trendy as are collegiate v-necks, puff sleeves and tank tops. Hoodies and sweatshirts are no longer just for hip-hop enthusiasts. Instead of conveying misogynistic graphics and messages, hoodies can now exclaim "Christian Girl" or "Love" interlaced with intricate floral icons. Some clothing lines offer customized messages or logos of church and group affiliations. Other shirts feature popular Christian musicians or offer humorous or bold testimonies.

As any parent knows, teenage girls love to accessorize. Christian clothing lines offer a stunning selection of jewelry, hats, tote bags and belts that accentuate while also spreading the Word. Even tube socks can show one's faith with icons as simple as the Jesus fish, a rhinestone cross, or hearts. Pendants double as cool guitar picks and colorful stickers dress up plain jeans and skirts. As for buttons, well they never go out of style. Graphic intensive and bursting with color, buttons sometimes relay a testimony better than spoken words. Teen girls get to wear and share their faith with fun.

As fun as fashion can be, engaging the soul of today's teenager means more than just wearing the right clothes. Messages and iconography mean nothing if they don't spread hope and have meaning. Like generations before them, girls want to appear attractive and want to be popular. Christian teens have something to say and don't want to compromise their values just to be popular. They are proud of their relationship with Christ and don't want to be ashamed to show it. Modern Christian clothing offers the right mix of style and message to show the world that Christian girls are cool too.
